The term “Leopard Rainbow trout” refers to the cryptic complexion of some Alaskan Rainbow Trout. The Leopard variety is one of the most beautiful and highly coveted fishes amongst fellow fishers.

The Range

Any stream in Alaska that supports a healthy trout population possesses the capacity to produce Leopards. However, there is no specific way that one can target them. An angler can only increase the odds as it places the fishing hook in the water. The waters are reputed to have a large number of trout in them.

The Western clear water tributaries of the Kuskokwim, Bristol Bay, Katmai National Park, and the Wood-Tikchik regions have earned their reputation for producing these spectacular Leopard Rainbow fishes.

The Timing

The time to visit fish for leopard rainbow trout depends on the prey. Throughout the springtime and summer, mice, voles, and other little and bite-sized critters scour the forest floor. The trout loves to prey on small critters. Therefore, when these critters swim through the ocean floor, the trout attack them. They end up devouring them.

The trout moves based on the water temperature. These fishes are inshore and cold-blooded. Therefore they move to deeper water as summer approaches.

As these fishes like to eat other fish, you can use small fish as bait. In other words, use lures/spinners that have fish patterns or are blue/chrome. Additionally, the fishing herring (as bait) on the bottom of a lake can also entice them. For flies, try patterns that resemble smolt or leeches (chrome/blue or dark colors).
